Differences between Word/PDF and OSD
Pages vs sections
Creating standards in the Online Standards Development (OSD) platform means the information is organized by section rather than by pages. The structure of the document is predefined according to the ISO/IEC Directives Part 2.
Content tagging
Some of the content in the online document needs to be identified, tagged, so different computing actions and automation, such as formatting or referencing, can take place. For example:
- When a reference to a standard is identified as a normative reference, the reference is automatically formatted correctly and added to the Normative reference section.
- Notes, Example are automatically numbered within clauses and automatically formatted at the export
Steps to import content from Word/PDF to OSD
Step 1: Create the clauses and subclauses of the document
Before you can import the content, you need to create all the clauses and sub-clauses of your document.
The article Manage clauses will provide you all necessary information on how to add a Clause or Sub-clause in the online document. Alternatively, you can also create numbered paragraphs and hanging paragraphs .

Step 3: Copy and paste the content from Word/PDF
Once you have created the structure of the document, simply copy and paste the text from Word/PDF into the online editor. It is possible to copy and paste text, table, hyperlinks etc... The formatting is retained.
Please note
Double-check the text you pasted as, depending on your operating system and the version of MS Word you are using, it is possible that special characters or sub-/ superscript formatting is not retained correctly.
Step 4: Validate the content quality
As mentioned above, some of the content in the online document needs to be identified, tagged, so different computing actions and automation, such as formatting or referencing, can take place. To help you reviewing the content of the document and identify elements of the text that needs to be tagged properly, you can use the Content Quality module. This is a like a spell checker in Word but it is enhanced content.
For more information on how to activate and use the Content Quality module, please refer to this article: Content Quality Check
Copy/Cut/Paste from within the tool
You can select any word, sentence, paragraph and click on CTRL+C/X to copy/cut, and then CTRL+V to paste your text.
You can also cut/copy and paste entire XML elements (like a table, note, graphic or equation). To do this, put your cursor inside the element you want to cut/copy, then click on the element name from the navigation bar at the bottom to select the entire element.
Once the element is selected, it becomes entirely yellow. You can then press CTRL+C/X and then CTRL+V in order to cut/copy paste it anywhere inside your publication
